Black Lion’s kit-modding prowess has been renowned across the pro audio industry for well over a decade. During this time, the Chicago based company have earned their reputation by breathing new life into older outboard or interface products from brands such as MOTU, Digidesign and Universal Audio by upgrading and modifying their internal circuitry and components.
Now in 2020, Black Lion have announced a new mod with a difference – this one you can do in your very own workshop, studio or home. Whilst designing their B172A model compressor in 2019, Nate Bierdeman and his team of engineers tirelessly compared the most popular and readily available T4b-style boutique optocell components currently on the market. To their dismay, no one optocell measured up to the standard they were trying to hit.
On a mission to ensure that every component in the B172A’s path was up to BLA code, the engineers set about designing their own optocell from scratch. A thorough analysis of electroluminescent panels and photocell combinations ensued, and through multiple experiments with panel sizing and tuning of electrical characteristics, Black Lion were able to achieve the desired benchmark of optical performance – and thus the T4BLA was born.
Now in 2020, Black Lion have announced a new mod with a difference – this one you can do in your very own workshop, studio or home.
Six months on from the B172A’s release, Black Lion are now making the T4BLA’s optical talents available to compatible third party compressors from brands such as Shadow Hills, Anthony DeMaria Labs and Klark Teknik.
Thanks for Black Lion’s intensive screening process, all T4BLA cells produced are exhibit incredible consistency. As such the T4BLA is a useful upgrade not only in terms of performance quality, but also for matching responses between multiple optical compressors.
