Each December, audio industry experts at MusicTech raise their glasses in celebration of another year in recording technology innovation. The quality pro audio gear releases of 2019 proved so plentiful, in fact, that MusicTech ceremoniously upped their category count to 14 just to fit everything in!
This year SCV were enormously proud to see Black Lion Audio take the prize of Best Studio Outboard for their Seventeen mono FET compressor.
Seventeen made a notable splash amongst studios (both home and commercial) in 2019, offering a classic 1176 style limiting amplifier sound as well as a few handy modern features to drag the design up to date. In Black Lion’s own words, Seventeen is a spin on ‘what the 76 should have been.’
In their GOTY Awards presentation article, MusicTech praised the compressor’s versatile talents across a variety of different sources and applications:
This versatile solid-state compressor/limiters can be used for everything from unobtrusive levelling of vocals and bass to dramatic dynamic compression
The writers went on to unpack the various features that made the Seventeen unique amongst a plethora of 1176 copycats, most notably its flexible wet/dry mix control for New York-style parallel compression which is a rare and valuable tool amongst mono limiting amps.
MusicTech also included an excerpt from John Pickford’s fantastic Seventeen review from May 2019:
I’m able to create a multitude of kit sounds, ranging from tight and punchy at moderate compression settings to explosive, surging and pumping effects
John Pickford (Music Tech, May 19)
