Phonos provides adequate support for both magnet and coil turntable cartridge types to ensure optimum performance and safety during playback.
Moving magnet cartridges offer a desirably lush and mellow sound, but cable capacitance often disrupts the frequency response as well as linearity of phase. To combat this, Phonos offers four individual capacities which can be switched to surgically flatten the frequency response or to increase high frequencies specifically during playback.
Another viable option – moving coil cartridges – occasionally suffer from low signal output making them less equipped to challenge excessive noise or hum. Phonos's solution is to provide 20dB higher preamp for the moving coil stage, as well as six switchable values of impedance to more accurately calculate the flattest possible frequency response.
Finally, Phonos also features a built in subsonic filter to neutralise turntable rumble caused by the turntable's drive mechanics and boosted by the preamp's low frequency gain.
Phonos from SPL features an equalisation curve that matches the original Recording Industry Association of America filter designed by Douglas Self. RIAA EQing has long been a global standard for recording and playback of phonograph records since the mid 1950s.
Like all of SPL's Professional Fidelity range Phonos is powered by proprietary 120v rail technology. In action, this offers unprecedented headroom and a voltage of 120v (with a 60v DC margin) which delivers wide dynamic range spanning beyond 140dB.
